====== Information and choice of study ====== >**Summary** >//Every year, Fontys ICT and Fontys University of Applied Sciences organise information and study choice activities, both within and outside Fontys. On this wiki page, these internal and external activities are discussed and we explain their place in the study selection process. Finally, you will find information intended for information officers and about the relations and contacts with the so-called 'supplying education.'// =====1 Introduction ===== Fontys helps students to make a well-considered choice of study. For this purpose, we have a wide range of information and study choice activities available within the different phases of the study choice process which are carried out regularly by the institutes (including Fontys ICT). ===== 2. Phases in the study choice process ===== Everyone involved in the study choice process goes through four phases, namely: orient - scout - deepen - decide Secondary school students do not do this at the same time and the duration of the process also varies from one pupil to another. Fontys offers for each phase choice of study- and orientation activities. =====3. Information activities ===== The starting point for all activities is, that the student himself is in charge of his own study career. The orientation phase of secondary school students is often facilitated from the school by deans and mentors within the framework of study career guidance. Halfway through senior general secondary education (havo) 4th year, the student takes control himself. To take the future students at our information website one step further, we have divided all activities into these **three categories**. Some activities and resources are found in multiple categories. == I have no idea == - Wide information 'Creative' - Wide information ICT - Magazine of interest "What do you choose?" - Workshop Choice of study == I'm still in doubt == - Open day / dusk - Trial days == I already know == - Study choice test At Fontys ICT we have a wide range of information and workshops, aligned with different target groups. These are used for internal and external activities. ====3.1 External activities ==== We regularly give information externally, at MBO schools (secondary vocational education), and HAVO/VWO-schools (secondary education) in the region. Target groups are: * Mbo-3 and mbo-4 * Havo-4, -5 * VWO-5 and -6 The policy from the Fontys Service Department Marketing & Communication is that the wide range of information provided by the study programmes is offered in a differentiated manner per target group. From Fontys ICT there are three information services, which can be provided externally at the schools in the region. In addition, we have two smaller activities. ==== Wide information ICT==== Externally at secondary education schools in the vicinity and at the Regional Information Study Evenings at Fontys University of Applied Sciences\\ Target group havo 4/5 and vwo 5/6\\ Explanation of 3 possible ICT-training courses within Fontys, professional images ICT specialist after graduation, similarities, discrepancies, usp's of study programmes and possible next steps in the study choice process.\\ The 3 ICT-study programmes within Fontys are: - HBO-ICT with teaching locations in Eindhoven and Tilburg - HBO-ICT English stream, Eindhoven - Business Informatics and Software Engineering, Venlo\\ There is for this information a presentation available via Team M&C. ==== Wide information 'Creative' ==== Externally at secondary education schools in the vicinity and at the Regional Information Study Evenings at Fontys University of Applied Sciences\\ Target group: senior general secondary education (havo) 4/5 and: pre-university education (vwo) 5/6\\ In this information is indicated that the "creative aspect" in very many different Fontys study programmes can be found. For boys and girls, who would like to learn a creative profession, there are several possibilities at Fontys. More information is available at Team M&C. ==== Information for secondary vocational education (MBO) ==== External to secondary vocational schools in the vicinity.\\ Target group: Mbo-3 and mbo-4\\ This information is a derivative of our study programme information and specifically addresses the connection possibilities from the MBO to our bachelor’s degree programme HBO-ICT or the Associate degree study programme: ICT Service Management. The bachelor’s degree programme HBO-ICT can be taken full-time or part-time. The Associate degree can only be followed on a part-time basis. More information about this is available from the MBO Coordinators Hans van Stam and Henk Gaasterland or from Elga van Heel (M&C Team). For short presentations to enthuse secondary school students at external locations, for example, an education market at a company or an event, we have developed two short do-activities. These are meant to offer "something fun in the field of ICT" to small groups of students within 15 minutes. ==== These do-activities are: ==== **Create your own Pacman game controller**\\ The MakeyMakey is an inventor's kit for everyone. With the MakeyMakey you can take over the functions of the computer (each brand, no drivers, no settings) with 2 wires! In this workshop we are going to play Pacman on game controllers, that we made ourselves with the help of the MaKey MaKey!\\ Duration: 15 minutes.\\ Number of participants: 1 - approx. 8 persons.\\ Required: internet connection + crate of materials, to be reserved at ISSD.\\ More information about this activity is available from team M&C. **Fun with Dots**\\ This do-activity is based on the principle of binary counting. * Take the cards with the numbers. * Give the 6 cards to a person and ask him/her to choose a number that appears on at least 1 card (don't tell you). * Let him/her select all the cards with that number and give them to you. * You look at it and magically know immediately the chosen number. \\ Duration: ... minutes\\ Number of participants: 1 - approx. 8 persons.\\ Requirements: no internet connection + crate of materials, to be reserved at ISSD.\\ More information about this activity is available from Team M&C. ==== 3.2. Internal activities at Fontys ICT ==== Within Fontys ICT we have the following internally organised information: ==== Trial study days ==== Fontys ICT regularly organises trial study days for secondary school students, mostly from mbo-4, havo-4, havo-5, vwo-5 and vwo-6. All information about this can be read on the Fontys trial study days website During the trial period, a student studies with others for a day at the institutes study programme. He/she gets information about the content of the study programme and follows 2 out of 4 workshops from the basic profiles. In addition, he/she will receive a Fundamentals in Programming workshop of 1.5 hours, where the programming courses from the first semester serve as a basis. We offer everyone a lunch, where there's an opportunity to talk to lecturers and students and finally there is a lecture in futurology, in which we take a look into the future of ICT and we will discuss the 'why' of our specialisations. The program of this day will be executed by lecturers and PR-students. Secundairy school students have ample opportunity to ask all their questions and get an impression of the content of the study programme, the atmosphere within our study programme and taste whether this learning environment suits them. The concept of the trial day is exactly the same in Eindhoven and Tilburg. It is possible for students to participate more than once in a trial day. So they are free to choose from several dates to take part and, for example, to follow 2 workshops. They can also participate once in Eindhoven and once in Tilburg. __**Workshops, that we're offering during probationary study**__ There are workshops ICT & Business, ICT & Media Design, ICT & Software Engineering and ICT & Technology. Also a workshop "Fundamentals in programming" and a course in futurology. **Workshop Fundamentals in Programming**\\ This workshop has been specially developed to give students an idea of what programming is all about and is based on the courses FUN12 in the first semester. The duration is 1.5 hours. Some secondary school students have been already acquainted with programming on the secondary school. For others it is completely new. Programming requires you to be able to think logically and you also have to like it. Programming is an important element of our study programme. In one main subject it is a little less important, in another other it is more important. On the Fontys ICT website you will find more information about the content of the study programme.\\ Do you want to know more about the content of the workshops for trial study days, you can request it from team M&C. ==== Study programme information HBO-ICT==== This information is only given during open days and evenings of Fontys University of Applied Sciences-School of ICT.\\ This information shows in about 20 minutes, how our study programme is structured and invites people, after this information to walk around on the study programme floors and to obtain more information in the specific theme rooms per profile and/or specialisation. Target group: mbo-4, havo 4/5 and vwo 5/6\\ When a secondary education school in the area requests to perform an information session on ICT, then we'll give them the so-called wide ICT information, the wide information Creative or the MBO information, as defined above under 3.1. "External activities". \\ There is for this information a presentation available from team M&C. ==== Open days / evenings ==== Fontys Service department Marketing & Communication has a defining role in the organisation of open days and evenings. Among other things, it centrally sets the dates for open days/evenings per calendar year, centralised media planning, facilitation and processing of the registration system for visitors to a open day, facilitation of an online system via the fontys.nl website, in which the programme for the open day is unlocked, personal mails to all open day subscribers and direct mail actions, as well as evaluation of the open day by means of reports. It also provides support to Fontys institutes by providing advice on the organisation of the open days, so that visitors can be optimally advised during the study choice process. This can be helpful for, during and after the open day.\\ More information about open days can be found on the portal of the Fontys Services department Marketing & Communication. //Due to the pandemic, information activities will take place online in the school year 2020/2021 and 2021/2022.// At Fontys ICT the logistical and communicative organisation of the open days and evenings is organised by the M&C Team. ===== 4. Lecturer's advisers ===== At each stage, the information officer will be asked to respond to the information needs of the potential student. In this, therefore, the information officer has a broad role. The information officer is a kind of **study choice counsellor**. One activity requires the information officer to have general knowledge about many study programmes, the other activity requires more empathy in the different target groups (secondary school meetings with parents). If young people are well supported in making the right choice of study, the expectation is that this will eventually result in a higher motivation to study and a reduction in the number of study dropouts. For Fontys, this means less need to invest a lot of energy in a large group //study switchers// the first year. What we at Fontys understand by an information officer is in fact a study choice counsellor. The information officers are the business card of Fontys and important inspirers in the study choice process for our potentials. At Fontys ICT the task of advisor is an optional one. Within each educational team, the lecturers are asked to, who likes to do information and PR. In this way, each team provides a number of lecturers, who like to do this. Some teachers only give information; others prefer to carry out workshops only. The lecturers' team of information officers changes annually. More information about the composition of this team is available at Team M&C. Are you an information officer and do you want to know more about this role, please download the document Task and role of information officer.\\ ===== 5. PR students ===== Because we cannot carry out many information and PR activities without the help of enthusiastic current students., we have a so-called PR student team, which consists of a number of enthusiastic current students from year 1 and/or 2. They have a nice side job here at. At the beginning of each academic year we are recruiting a large number of new students to keep on adding to the team. As soon as students start their internship or graduation, they often don't have time. The team is managed by Team M&C. On the Fontys ICT Portal a separate page is taken for communication and document sharing between team M&C and PR students. =====6. Relationships and contact with suppliers education ===== From the Fontys Service department Marketing & Communication three Advisors Supplying Education (Adviseurs Toeleverend Onderwijs, ATO) are responsible for the establishment and maintenance of a network of relations with supplying schools. They are the point of contact and coordinator for (new) questions (from deans, among others.) aimed at connecting supplying education at the higher professional education (hbo). They make an inventory of the market needs of supplying schools and translate these needs into an activity within Fontys institutes and services, and vice versa. Requests from MBO and secondary schools in the region, to come and give information at their school, are received by the 3 ATOs and from there are forwarded to the information coordinators within the various Fontys institutes, including Fontys ICT.\\ For Fontys ICT this role lies within the M&C team. Who is the point of contact for which domain?\\ * Rob Doorleijers: domains of man and society and the arts * Coby Malogrino: domain of technology * Erna Kuiper: domain of economics For which topics can I contact the ATOs?\\ * Developments in the supplying field. * Analysis of the information we provide from our institute (white spots analysis). * Other connection issues (choice of study, informations, knowledge sharing, etc.). Contact with the ATO for MBO and Secondary schools takes place via the M&C team within Fontys ICT.\\ ===== 7.
