Codes and naming information systems
Summary
Description of the use of codes and abbreviations to ensure uniformity within information systems through a naming convention. It deals successively with the reason and scope, management and creation of codes and abbreviations..
1. Why agreements on codes and naming?
Codes for subject areas, classes, teachers and rooms are used in various information systems within Fontys ICT. To ensure that a code has the same meaning for everyone, it is necessary to make outline agreements about this. These agreements are described in this naming convention..
2. Scope
The codes covered are diverse: class codes, educational routes, subject codes, package codes in Progress, codes for educational units in Progress and time periods. For Canvas specifically, these codes are supplemented by agreements on naming (master's) courses, competences and performance indicators. These codes are used in multiple information systems for educational support and delivery, as in:
- SVS (Student monitoring system)
- Xedule
- Canvas
- Deployment system and deployment matcher
- Curriculum Database (CDB)
- Survey tool (Crowdtech)
3. Ownership and management of the Fontys ICT Naming Convention
The informatiemanagerowns the Fontys ICT Naming Convention and manages all agreements in the naming convention and the connection between them. The following roles within Fontys ICT provide advice on the conventions and are consulted on changes:
- Key users and functional administrator of the above systems
- Curriculum owners
4. Codes and abbreviations
The same abbreviations are used by all those responsible for the same training variants, programmes, phases and minors. When defining the different codes, these abbreviations are often a component or building block.
4.1 Achtergrond
Abbreviations and codes are used to give unambiguous names to various objects in the Fontys ICT information provision. This page is a concrete elaboration belonging to the Fontys ICT Naming Convention .
For the total overview of abbreviations and codes, see the:
- Naamgevingsconventie 2024 (to be phased out by 1 September 2025)..
- Naamgevingsconventie 2025 (effective immediately for the new starting semester).
4.2 Class codes
Class codes are used within Fontys ICT in the timetable application Xedule, the SVS, the Fontys-wide registration and study progress system Progress.net and in the digital learning environment Canvas. Ownership of the class codes is vested in functional management of SVS. The source of the class codes for the information systems is therefore SVS.
4.2.1 Structure
A class code is made up of the following structure and consists of a maximum of ten positions:
- the prefix is the abbreviation of the educational variant. An exception is the full-time Bachelor's program, which has no prefix. Followed by a dash (-);
- abbreviation of educational route/phase (minimum 1, maximum 3 positions);
- subject/specialization (minimum 1, maximum 3 positions);
- sequential number of the class starting with number 1;
- specific abbreviations such as location Tilburg (T) as a suffix.
