Information Literacy
Summary
A summary page of topics that can be categorised under information literacy. The topics described are: information sources, referencing information sources, copyright, open educational resources, research information and publishing information.
Introduction
Every student must be information literate to complete a HBO study programme. It is the task of lecturers to help them do this. To this end, numerous supporting materials and training courses are available from the Fontys Library.
The overview below contains the topics, materials and resources that are important for education and research within Fontys, both for students, lecturers and all other employees.
Information sources
Digital Library Fontys is the home page with resources and learning materials for study or research in the form of LibGuides and categorised by subject domain. For Fontys ICT, this is the Engineering, Nature and ICT domain. Its main components are:
- Fontys Finder: searching databases;
- All databases (also known as AZ list): an overview of all databases licensed by Fontys, thus providing access to full-text articles and books;
- Fontys Library Quickstart: a short overview with handy tools from the Fontys Library;
- Tips per type of information source such as databases, journals, e-books, multimedia and OERs.
Open learning resources
Open learning resources: Fontys R&D page with more information such as what OERs are, workshops, frequently asked questions, relevant links such as to Wikiwijs, Npuls, Edusources and Open Educational Resources at UNESCO.
Search skills
Search Skills is an online instructional environment developed at Fontys in Canvas for education on searching and processing information. The training consists of 4 modules, each of which can be completed at a basic and an in-depth level.

Publishing information from applied research
Fontys is introducing a new platform for publishing (research) information: Pure.
The information in Pure is displayed on the Fontys page Research: Practical and Innovative, the Pure portal and Publinova.
Publinova is a national platform where HBO researchers can publish about their research.
Pure is currently in the implementation phase of the process that runs until spring 2026. In the near future, Pure will be rolled out Fontys-wide in phases. This will make Pure the successor to Surfsharekit.
Transition phase from SURFsharekit to Pure
SURFsharekit has not been available since 29 April 2025. Fontys is now temporarily using Pure as a repository for research output. The implementation of Pure is phased by institute, we expect it in autumn 2025.
What this means:
* Output that was in SURFsharekit before 29 April will be automatically transferred to Pure;
* Until Pure is active within Fontys ICT, only urgent knowledge products (such as publications linked to a dataset in Dataverse) can be delivered;
* Onderzoekers houden hun metadata bij in een eigen format of met this form.
More information and the form can be found on the Research Output Register in Pure page of Fontys University of Applied Sciences.).
