Exemption
Summary
Describes the conditions and procedures for applying for exemption.
Exemptions for (parts of) units of study can only be granted by the examination board. The examination board is advised by examiners of the parts of units of study for which exemption is requested. Exemptions must be requested in advance1).
The procedure to be followed by the student is as follows:
- The student contacts an examiner of the course or part for which he/she wishes to be exempted.
- The examiner assesses, on the basis of evidence provided by the student or on the basis of an assessment, whether the student has sufficient control on the matter for which an exemption is requested.
- If that is the case, the examiner gives a favourable advice for the exemption to the student and the authorised examination chamber.
- The student submits a request for exemption to the examination chamber, together with the underlying evidence and the positive advice of the examiner.
The examination chamber then decides whether or not to grant the exemption and notifies the student of the decision. The examination chamber also sends the decision along with the evidence to the Student Desk, which files it in the student's file and processes the exemption in Progress.
The relevant process diagram is shown below in Figure 1. Requesting an examiner's opinion is covered by 'requesting additional data'.

Study delay, due to not granted exemptions, is the responsibility of the student. The examination chamber does not provide for a special provision in these cases, such as extra testing opportunities, for the prevention of this study delay.
