BKO

Summary
Information about the content of and procedure for obtaining the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) for employees without educational qualifications.

What's BKO?

Within the framework of the professionalisation of instructors, Fontys has the Fontys Teaching Qualifications (FKO). A distinction is made between the:

  • Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO);
  • Mid-level Teaching Qualification (MKO);
  • Senior Teaching Qualification (SKO).

BKO is the qualification for new lecturers and (associate) professors who do not have a teaching qualification. The employee must demonstrate that he or she has the teaching activities listed below in his or her duties and performs them at the level of performance indicators. The teaching activities are derived from the national protocol Basic Didactic Skills Qualification (BDB) in combination with job descriptions and competence profiles as described in the job description of Fontys University of Applied Sciences.

For the Fontys BKO the following teaching activities have been formulated:

  1. Supervisor of learning processes;
  2. Redesigning education;
  3. Being a professional .

Training

New employees are registered by P&O for the professionalisation program “Didactic Competence in Higher Professional Education (Didactisch Bekwaam voor het HBO)”. In this practical training programme, our own learning questions are central. The learning questions are linked to the expectations for the performance of the tasks as a lecturer and the competencies that are expected of a lecturer in higher professional education. This training consists of 13 meetings and prepares the employee for the BKO assessment. This training is facilitated by Fontys ICT in terms of both time and money.

Qualification

In order to achieve the qualification, the employee must successfully complete the BKO assessment. This assessment consists of a class visit, a portfolio and an interview. Two experienced Fontys lecturers (from an institute other than Fontys ICT) will act as independent assessors. The assessment will lead to a certificate if there is sufficient result. The BKO-certificate together with the BKE-certificate forms the Basic Didactic Skills Qualification (BDB) as it is recognised nationally. The employee must register in time for the assessment. This can be done via the enrolment form on the site FHKE. The planned assessment weeks are also listed here.

Once the assessment has been completed, the certificate will be sent to the Executive Secretariat. Obtaining the BKO qualification is a requirement for a permanent position.

Exemption

Lecturers who are already in possession of an officially recognised teaching qualification may be granted exemption from the Fontys BKO. BDB certificates obtained elsewhere may also grant exemption. If you think you are entitled to an exemption for Fontys BKO on the basis of previous results, please contact HR Fontys ICT. In that case, substantiated with the reason why an exemption would be appropriate and copies of the relevant diplomas and/or certificates, an exemption for BKO can be applied for by HR Fontys ICT at FHKE.
