Summary
This page describes the trainee programme for junior lecturers within Fontys ICT. It explains the reason and purpose, the content and set-up of the programme; the terms of employment, hours and tasks. The application procedure for the trainee programme is also explained.

Reason and purpose

At Fontys, we believe “growth through attention and challenge” is important. For students and for employees.

Fontys ICT has been a growing institute for years, both in terms of students and faculty population. In order to be able to see the growing population of students receive the best fitting tailor-made education, it is of great importance to let the teaching population grow along with it. The connection between student and lecturer is one of the spearheads of the Fontys ICT educational vision: “We offer every student a tailor-made study, focusing on what the student is good at or wants to become even better at. The education stimulates qualities, talents and ambitions. In education, students are motivated and coached to be enterprising and inquisitive”.

Students need lecturers they can identify with. This is why Fontys ICT wants to set up the trainee programme for junior lecturers from spring 2023. Initially for a maximum of five trainees. In doing so, we offer the trainees group supervision and intervision in the trainee programme provided by the educationists. The aim is to train the various young professionals to become lecturer-researchers. By doing so, Fontys ICT hopes to make its lecturer population larger, broader and more inclusive and increase student bonding.

Content and structure of programme

The traineeship is a learning-by-doing programme in which the young professional is part of a teaching team or research team. In addition, the young professional is part of a community of trainees. The following elements are included in the development programme:

  • The programme is intended for alumni of Fontys ICT with 0 to 2 years of work experience;
  • The programme focuses on the development of teaching skills, personal leadership, time management and content skills;
  • The trainee will receive a full-time appointment for 12 months at Fontys ICT as a junior Lecturer (3) in scale 10 (temporary contract), with an option to extend for 12 months (temporary contract);
  • The trainee will receive a Personal IT Budget;
  • The trainee is appointed with a specific assignment within Fontys ICT which is determined by the PM of the location where the trainee will start work;
  • The trainee will work 3 days a week as a junior lecturer at Fontys ICT. During those 3 days, the trainee will be assigned to Fontys ICT teaching in various semesters (profiles and specialisations) appropriate to his/her background. There is also the possibility of working on one or more research projects within the Fontys ICT Research Groups. The starting point is that the trainee consciously chooses a location(s) and teaching method(s) each semester, so that different experiences are gained within Fontys ICT;
  • The other 2 days are the 'learning days' in which the trainee develops as a professional in the IT field. This development as a professional can be shaped in several ways;
    • Each trainee follows the group-based trainee programme with fellow trainees within Fontys ICT.
      This programme focuses on;
      • How the trainee guides students in learning processes, designs education (learning activities and assessment) and develops as a professional. This is done within the educational vision of Fontys ICT. The trainee is required to obtain the BKO (Basic Teaching Qualification) within the trainee programme;
      • Intervision with fellow trainees and personal development of the trainee;
      • Attention is paid to the Fontys organisation, Fontys wide development and connection to various Fontys themes;
    • In addition to the group training programme, work is done on one of the following options:
      • By working as an IT professional at one of the PiE or PiI;
      • By following a part-time Master's programme;
      • By following Fontys ICT education in a profile or specialisation in which the trainee wishes to gain further skills;
      • By starting/building up his/her own IT-related business (in this case, the 2 'learning days' fall outside the Fontys ICT appointment);
      • Other, namely…(other alternatives can be determined in consultation with the PM.

A third and final interview will then take place if both the first and second interviews are found to be positive.

The purpose of the third interview is to establish the trainee programme in the Form Trainee Programme Fontys ICT. Together with the PM, the profile description of the trainee is described and the activities regarding education and professionalisation are made concrete.
